2. records onto a VCR, DVD or a computer
3. can be viewed online (but not necessarily)
4. weather proof
5. good night vision (for at least 50 ft)
6. as cheap as possible
1) Wireless means only the video signal is wireless – the camera will still need a wire for power.
2 – 3) Means you could go with either an analog (composite video) or IP based camera. If you get a surveillance DVR, it has its own hard dis for storing video locally – and most of the newer oes can also be assigned an IP address so it just becomes part of your home network. If your network is set up properly, the DVR can be accessed over the internet.
4 – 5) Not too many in the IP camera environment – more common for the composite units.
Swann and Lorex make cameras that fit your requirements. They also make the surveillance DVRs. Fry’s Electronics has a good selection.
If you go the computer route, expect to use a lot of hard drive space – and it also means your computer must be on all the time – that is a lot of power. You don’t want to record to a VCR – the regular VCRs need to be fed too manu tapes and the time-lapse VCRs are expensive. I am not aware of any that record to DVD – that does not make sense to me.
Budget: ~$400 for a 4-channel surveillance DVR with a hard drive. The cameras will be around $150 – but it will be wired, not wireless. Most of the wireless cameras won’t have the night vision throw you are looking for.
