Published by admin | Filed under opinion, culture
Anyone who has worked long enough in other countries will know that values differ across cultures. Some culture value group decisions, whereas others think that leader should take charge. Meeting in Germany usually start on time, whereas they might be half an hour late in Brazil without much concern. We need to be sensitive to the fact that cultural differences exist and, although often subtle, can influence decisions, behavior and relations among employees.
There was findings say that Americans with European heritage are more individualistic than people in many othercountries.Only people in some South American countries apparently score higher on individualism. In contrast, people from Taiwan, HK,Hungary, and Portugal are among those with much lower individualism.
When people from America or Europe come to Asia they always said that Managing in Asia was a relatively easy process because no one pushed back. Cause outside Asia, its like war on the daylight. How that can be happen ? It because Asia feel the value of power distance where people accept unequal distribution of power in a society. People in Asian countries tend to have high power distance scores. They accept , value obedience to authority and are comfortable receiving commands from their superiors without consultation or debate.
In contrast, people in Israel,Austria,Denmark,Australia, and other countries with low power distance expect relatively equal power sharing. They view the relationship with their boss as one interdependence, not dependence; that is, they believe their boss is also dependent on them, so they expect power sharing and consultation before decisions affecting them are made.
