Basketball games - no longer safe?
Published by peacebearer | Filed under opinion, criminality, news
It seems like even basketball games are no longer safe these days! Who would ever think that a Philadelphia teenager could get shot and killed last night (Friday) during a basketball game at a recreation center, no less? Yes, it’s a troubling, scary world out there that even sports areas are no longer spared from violence and criminality.
Ironically, the center where the incident occurred is even named after Martin Luther King Jr., a well-regarded advocate of non-violence. The shooting also happened barely thee days after King’s birthday and three days before the legal holiday that’s celebrated in his honor.
The still unnamed 16-year old victim was rushed to Temple Hospital. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
What bothers me, apart from the fact that someone very young died, is the fact that there seems to be no decline in the criminality rates of today. Shouldn’t something so drastic be done in order to address this problem?
