What to think about when choosing Multiband Antennas for Fleet Management and GPS tracking systems
<!– @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } A:link { color: #0000ff } –>
As the number of wireless applications for Fleet Management & GPS tracking systems explode, installing more and more antennas on a single vehicle is becoming difficult, if not impossible.
If your dilemma can be described as – so many wireless applications, so little roof space – then it is time to look for a multiband solution.
For fixed or mobile applications that require a single radome for two-, three- or four- different applications, multiband antennas like the Mobile Mark SMW Antennas can’t be beat!
There is enough room to accommodate numerous GPS tracking system applications today and broadband capacity to accommodate even more applications tomorrow. It is rugged enough for commercial and industrial applications and attractive enough for consumer applications.
Why would you choose a multiband combination for Fleet Management & GPS tracking systems?
There are many reasons why someone might want to use multiple applications for GPS tracking systems, for example, 3-cables allow the installer to combine GPS, Cellular and WiFi: the GPS antenna for vehicle tracking, the Cellular antenna to communicate the location and the WiFi antenna for quick data download at the dock door. Add a fourth cable to be part of an emergency response mesh network at 4.9 GHz.
Here are some examples of Fleet Management & GPS Tracking System Multiband Antenna Applications:
Delivery van: GPS & Cellular for location tracking and fleet management, WiFi for data collection and transfer
Long-haul truck: Cellular for real time connections, a second 1.9 GHz for data diversity, GPS for GPS tracking systems, and fourth cable for Orbcomm for long range coverage
Emergency vehicle: GPS for vehicle tracking, Cellular for data, WiFi for Mobile Hot-spot, and 4.9 for Public Safety mesh networking at 4.9 GHz
School Bus: GPS for vehicle tracking, Cellular to communicate the location to the central monitoring station, and WiFi for live data streaming to and from the bus
Bus shelter: Cellular to communicate with the central office, WiFi to communicate with the passing bus
Limousine fleets: Temporary mag-mount set-up offering GPS for navigation, fleet management and vehicle tracking, Cellular for voice channel, and additional Cellular for data-only channel
Public Safety: GPS for positioning, Cellular for real time internet connections, WiFi for video surveillance
Train: GPS for timing, Cellular for M2M telemetry, and WiFi for transit surveillance or a quick data uplink at the main terminal
How many and which bands do you need for Fleet Management and GPS Tracking Systems?
Multiband Antennas, like Mobile Mark’s new SMW Series Antenna, provides simultaneous operation on a variety of bands, all in one compact antenna. These multi-antennas can accommodate two, three or even four different Fleet Management & GPS tracking system applications.
The unique modular construction of the SMW antennas means that a large number of combinations are possible. Network designers can draw on a large pallet of wireless systems to figure out which combination best meets the customers’ needs.
Fleet Management and GPS Tracking System combinations are drawn from: GPS, Cellular GSM/CDMA, a second channel for Cellular Diversity at 1.9 GHz or WiFi Diversity at 2.4 GHz, AWS at 1.7 & 2.1 GHz, WiFi at both 2.4 & 5.0 GHz, WiMAX at 2.5 GHz, Orbcomm, the 700 MHz band and Public Safety 4.9 GHz.
The broadband nature of some of the antenna elements also provides flexibility for network changes down-the-road. For example, the 800 MHz – 2.7 GHz antenna element can be used today for Cellular at 850 & 1900 MHz and then switched tomorrow to WiMAX at 2.5-2.7 GHz. This offers tremendous flexibility for the evolution of Fleet Management and GPS Tracking Systems.
Are there many Fleet Management and GPS Tracking Systems examples of four applications in a single vehicle?
Applications that you might want to combine with GPS include: Cellular, Cellular Diversity, AWS at 1.7 & 2.1 GHz, WiFi at 2.4 & 5 GHz, WiMAX at 2.5 & 3.5 GHz, Orbcomm, 700 MHz band and Public Safety at 4.9 GHz band.
For maximum coverage, the SMW can be configured with 4-cables to cover four different applications. The addition of the fourth cable greatly expands the number of wireless permutations that can be accommodated for virtually any Fleet Management and GPS Tracking System.
Some 4-cable antennas maintain the same physical size and shape as the standard SMW antenna, but the SWM-403 (SMW with Orbcomm) adds an external whip antenna for Orbcomm coverage. This antenna has an extremely high efficiency rating on the Orbcomm channel.
Will the SMW Series Antenna stand up to the job of day-in-day out Fleet Management and GPS Tracking Systems?
It is important to choose an antenna with staying power; something that will work with the Fleet Management and GPS Tracking System both from day one and for a long time to come.
The fact that so much can be packed into a small package is certainly a strong selling point for the SMW Antennas, but it is not the only reason these antennas are so popular. The SMW Series is ideal for industrial and commercial grade applications. It is rugged, compact and water-proof.
The antenna is easy to install and mechanically sound; this thru-hole antenna is sealed to the mounting surface with a thick gasket and rated at IEEE spec IPx7 waterproofing. The radome is made from a heavy duty UV stable ASA plastic. The off-set conical shape and sturdy radome material resists damage from either vandalism or accidental impacts.
In addition, the SMW antenna is popular for its electrical design. Each band is effectively isolated from interference from another band. The antennas feature efficiency ratings of up to 85%, extremely high ratings for mobile antennas. This high efficiency antenna has already passed PTCRB certification testing with a number of different systems. This is important because many Fleet Management and GPS Tracking Systems must meet PTCRB certification.
What about Fleet Management and GPS Tracking Systems that require antennas for temporary mounting?
Some surface mount antennas Fleet Management and GPS Tracking Systems can also be configured for temporary mount applications with the addition of a magnet mount base. Look for an antenna that is housed in a rugged radome and can be moved easily from vehicle-to-vehicle.
Mobile Mark’s MGW Series are available with either a black or white radome and can accommodate up to three applications.
For fixed or mobile applications that require a single radome for two-, three- or four- different applications, multiband antennas like the Mobile Mark SMW and MGW Antennas can’t be beat!
There is enough room to accommodate numerous GPS tracking system applications today and broadband capacity to accommodate even more applications tomorrow. It is rugged enough for commercial and industrial applications and attractive enough for consumer applications.

gps tracking surveillance Questions
Surveillance Society to the Max?
What if the powers that be are planting surveillance technology all around us? What if it is already in place, and they are just waiting for the right terrorist event to spring the technology into action? Tracking through RFID, GPS, Cams, Digital, or what have you. I think secret societies or whatever have extreme power. For instance, what if your employer puts a GPS device in your car? or what if everything truly becomes RFID tagged. What if every step you take is recorded? Is this scary or what? I know there are the idiots that think no one really has anything to hide? Look at China? Russia during the Cold War? You don’t have anything to hide until you bcome a virtual slave and you need to escape the system? The powers that be may want slaves? Greedy? Does the full implications of this threat or reality that the masses have no power and we truly are sheople bother anyone else? What is this world becoming??? Is World War III around the corner?
ummm. this may have been a valid question 20 years ago. today, it’s a done deal. everything you mention already happens. the american population practically begged for it. Real-ID was supposed to go into effect in March, i believe. they’ve moved it back two years. you cannot walk around my town without your every step recorded on vid tape, there are cameras everywhere, like some sci-fi movie of the future. the future is now.
