Published by admin | Filed under movie

Based on the novel by W. Somerset Maugham, The Painted Veil is a love story set in the 1920s that tells the story of a young English couple, Walter(Edward Norton), a middle class doctor and Kitty(Naomi Watts), an upper class woman, who get married for the wrong reason and relocate to Shanghai, where she falls in love with someone else. When he uncovers her infidelity, in an act of vengeance, he accept a job in a remote village in China ravaged by a deadly epidemic, and takes their relationship and gives them purpose in one of the most remote and beautiful places on earth.

It is a touch story of a man with unconditional love to a woman and his persistence for his commitment of marriage. In 1920, it is such a scandal if a man divorced a woman. Kitty has no choice except follow the Walter rules to come with him moves into the remote village to be a doctor and try to handle cholera plague. Faraway from town, only one neighbor to talk makes Kitty feel useless. Walter works as a doctor even though he is just a bacteriologist. There’s not lot Westerner around that place, it means, people will always come to that place on purpose. At last, Kitty finds out that her husband is a true gentleman and noble man after all. It makes her flattered as her wife and touched her heart to help his job and to know surround. She is starting to teach children on the monastery. She begins to realize that Walter will always stay with her no matter what. Both of them realize about how is the quality of relationship between husband and wife should do from the first time. It is not a romantic story, but it has deeper message for audience to watch.

Perhaps, we could learn from this movie where the divorce is not a suitable answer for anything. Commitment and forgiveness is the answer for a happy marriage life.
