Freedom Writers MovieIt is a movie which inspired by a true story and the diaries of real Long Beach teenagers after the LA riots, during the worst outbreak of Interracial gang warfare. Two time academy award winner, Hilary Swank stars as Erin Gruwell, whose passion to become a teacher is soon challenged by a group of Black, Latino, and Asian gang bangers who hate her even more than each other. When Erin begins to listen to them in a way no adult has ever done, she begins to understand that for these kids, getting through the day alive is enough they are not delinquents but teenagers fighting “a war of streets” that began long before they were born. Erin gives them something they never had from a teacher before – respect. For the first time, these teens experience a hope that maybe, they might show the world that their lives matter and they have something to say. Erin try to make them stand up and proud of themselves without anger to the world. She begins to fight their right as part of school to get and use the real book.

Because of the habit of gangster, all the student cannot open mind and tell Erin what they need and what they want or what they feel. She insist to know with giving an empty book to each student. She wants all to write everything happen everyday, the song their singing, the story they want to tell, something that feel disturbing and need to pull out. In the end, if they want Erin to read about, all they have to do is put on the cupboard. The student respond it well, and it has touch Erin when she read every student writing.

She wants to change their perspective and prove to the school that they could do also. Erin brought her student to open their mind, that it happens all the time in the world, but they could survive and become somebody because they always find a way to survive and not just complain and ashamed even though they have nothing, they still have pride. Erin try to improve their knowledge with her own money. She even try to find extra money with extra part time job just to bring them to go outside school and buy them some books.

This movie is a good and definitely has a value. It is a true story of what happening today in America. And it is the truth about somebody who has brave to stand up to do something for change the future of teenagers. Erin characteristic is symbolize of idealism of a teacher. Do we have here ? I don’t think so.
