Day Night Dome Questions
clear tupperware as a ball pythons hide?day/night bulb?
is it ok if the tupperware used as the hides are clear or do they need to be colored? (stupid question i know… lol)
also, for the bulbs. does there need to be a day and night one, or can i just simply have one in a black dome fixture on all the time? do i turn it off at night?

The whole point of a hide is… so they can hide. So, yes the hide should not be transparent. You can use many different things as hides. Those brown clay pots (for flowers) are used quite often. Just tip the pot upside-down and carefully chip away at the hole to make it big enough for your snake to fit through. Then file it to remove any potentially sharp edges. Leave it upside-down in the enclosure and voilla, you have a cheap hide that is fully functional.
If you use a white light, it may be too bring for your snake at night. I have used red lights for night time for my snakes without a problem. Or if you use a UTH, you can turn the light off all together.

Why are my reptile heat bulbs going out so quickly?
I have a veiled chameleon I bought this summer. I got 2 Deep Dome ZooMed lamps. I have been putting 75 watt bulbs in them but they don’t last long at all. After I put the next ones in it takes around 30 days before they go out at around the same time (within a week). I have them on a daily timer where they go off at night and come back on in the morning. So far I have spent like $40 on stupid lamp bulbs! I have also noticed that the cheaply put together piece of the lamp where the wire goes into the dome and where the bulb screws into is loose and whenever I change the bulbs I have to retighten it, which is very annoying. What should I do? Could it be that the lights are constantly being turned on and off? Should I replace the lamps with other ones? What’s another good brand of reptile lamps? I might also increase wattage to a 100w sun basking bulb and a 75w blue night bulb. Thanks!!!

One thing that can age a lamp too quickly is if your line voltage is too high (it happens!) If you can check it and find that it is beyond ~125VAC (ex: 130VAC) then that may be why they are burning out so soon. Years ago, our local power company had to replace the nearby pole power transformer to fix that problem at my dad’s house.
I often recommend the Philips “Halogena” brand 60W halogen FLOOD light from places like Home Depot for ~$5 each. I’m not a fan of SPOT light type reptile lights for chameleons but prefer flood lights instead. It is very important that the distance be properly set such that the basking area is ~85F-90F and not much higher. You may find that somewhere between 8″-12″ will create the right temp zone. As a sanity check, stick the back of your hand at the basking spot where it should not feel much more than just a bit warm and no more. Burns are quite possible if things are not setup correctly.
