Origin of Grandfather Clocks
Prior to wall clocks, time was measured through water based clocks, hourglass and then systems moved to utilize the pendulum principle. Most of us believe that Galileo made the first wall clock, but that is only partially true as it was Christian Huygens who used Galileo's pendulum principle to build the first wall clock . It was named ‘grandfather's clock' most probably due to a song by Henry Work in the later part of the eighteenth century.
Grandfather clocks are often classified into 2 types as follows
• Chain driven grandfather clocks (mostly wound once every week by pulling the chains)
• Cable driven grandfather clocks ( wound in the concerned dial)
Two major factors which should be taken into consideration while buying a grandfather clock are as follows
• Space: This is a factor which decides the presence of a grandfather clock in our homes. Grandfather clocks utilize a considerate amount of area, hence space is an important factor. Small wall clocks are preferred in case of smaller rooms.
• Cost: The price is slightly on the higher side, but you do not buy a wall clock every day, so price is a factor but these clocks are worth every penny paid. The satisfaction of owning a grandfather clock is immense and it is like being a part of history.
